In February 2019, Dollar and sister company Thrifty announced some changes tailored to help those who may not have credit cards and need to use debit cards for car rentals. The updates included: Susan Jacobs, Senior Vice President for Dollar, explains, “This is yet another way we can do our part to help minimize any stress when traveling, especially for our customers who choose to use a debit card.Listening to our customers and providing a better experience is in our DNA here at Dollar, and that’s why leading the industry with this big policy change is so important to us.” The New York Attorney General has specific rules for car rental companies, outlined on its website: “New York State law prohibits car rental companies from refusing to rent to consumers who are 18 or older, who do not have a credit card, or because of race, color, ethnic origin, religion, disability or sex.” While car rental companies in NY must rent to anyone 18 or older, they can still add a young driver surcharge for anyone under 25. In most cases, you must pay rental charges with a credit or debit card when picking up a rental car, but may be able to pay additional charges in cash upon returning it.

We learned all this in Irish Central’s charming post, “How things have changed – ten things that Irish women could not do in 1970s.” And that made us wonder, what were things like for women in America before the ’70s? Until the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, women could be fired from their workplace for being pregnant. Report cases of sexual harassment in the workplace. Women could not don their running shoes until 1972!
So while we still have a long way to go to secure total equality for women, let’s take a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come. The first time that a court recognized sexual harassment in the workplace was in 1977 and it wasn’t until 1980 that sexual harassment was officially defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
